Lotus Foods Forbidden Rice® to Be Featured in Vegan Iron Chef Competition

Competition being held by Kent State University Dining Services on Sunday, April 22, noon to 5pm, as part of their Earth Day celebrations. The competition will include both a student competition and a professional chef round. Chefs in both categories will be using Lotus Foods’ most popular rice, Forbidden Rice® in the dishes they prepare. The student chef competition at 2 p.m. will feature the dishes of six student teams from Kent State University and the University of Akron. Professional chefs will begin competing at 3 p.m. The competitions will take place on the second floor of the Kent Student Center. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

“We are delighted to contribute the Forbidden Rice®” says Lotus Foods co-founder and co-owner Caryl Levine. “Not only is it extremely healthy, but it has a delicious roasted nutty flavor and makes a dramatic plate presentation.” A spoonful of black rice bran, which is equivalent to 10 spoonfuls of cooked black rice, contains more anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar and more fiber and vitamin E. Dr. Oz has promoted the benefits of black rice on Good Morning America and recently on his own show.

Cooking with Lotus Foods rice is a great way for vegans or anyone to support compassionate and sustainable innovation. Lotus Foods rices are non-GMO verified, gluten-free, organic and fairly traded. Adds Levine, “We have also partnered with Christine Waltermyer, Founder and Director of the Natural Kitchen Cooking School and author of the Natural Vegan Kitchen to create some exceptional vegan recipes for our delicious rices.”

Lotus Foods Forbidden Rice® and Organic Forbidden Rice® are distributed throughout the US in natural food stores, retail grocery stores and online. First-time black rice consumers should be sure to visit the Lotus Foods website for recipe ideas.” www.lotusfoods.com

Since 1995, Lotus Foods has been partnering in fair trade with small family farmers around the world who are growing rice sustainably and preserving heirloom and specialty rices. Our objective is not only to help rice farmers earn a living wage but to bring healthier rice choices to consumers.

The Vegan Iron Chef Competition is the opening event for the 4th annual “Who’s Your Mama?” Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival, a week-long Earth Day celebration. For additional information, contact Jeff [email protected]
