Valuing Life: Insights from a Medical Evacuation Veteran
By: Lacey Smith
In my years as a medical evacuation helicopter pilot, three principles have defined the value of
life for me.
First, time is paramount. Every second counts in emergencies, teaching us to
cherish every moment that we have with the people that mean the most. Take action. Second,
resilience is crucial. Witnessing survivors inspires unyielding strength in the face of adversity.
Not all wounds are visible. Finally, compassion is essential. Providing care and comfort in
critical moments underscores the profound impact on our relationships with others. Treating
people with kindness and respect no matter their age, gender, race, religion, or nationality.
These experiences have taught me that valuing life means appreciating the time we have,
embracing resilience, and extending compassion. Practicing this each day gives us the
opportunity to make a meaningful difference in this world.
