What is Supplemental Insurance?

Supplemental insurance is additional insurance that you can purchase to help you pay for services and out-of-pocket expenses that your regular insurance does not cover. With the exception of supplemental dental and vision plans, supplemental plans pay cash benefits directly to the insured and the money can be used to help pay out-of-pocket health expenses, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, or for daily living expenses such as rent/mortgage, groceries, medication or to help cover a financial gap due to lost wages.

How Does a Supplemental Health Insurance Plan Work?

Supplemental insurance pays a cash benefit to the insured. The amount of cash and how it is paid out depends on the supplemental health insurance plan or policy. The insured decides how the money received from the supplemental insurance plan is spent.

Why do I Need Supplemental Insurance if I already have Health Insurance?

Health insurance is very important but it only covers part of the protection. You may also need coverage to help fill financial gaps such as out-of-pocket health expenses and other daily living expenses. Supplemental insurance pays you a cash benefit directly to you to help fill those financial gaps.

How is Supplemental Insurance Different than Health Insurance?

When you are injured or sick, your health insurance pays your doctors and hospitals; supplemental insurance is designed to pay you. The cash benefit you receive from your supplemental insurance plan can be used for anything you choose, including expenses health insurance won’t pay for, such as deductibles, offsetting a loss of income during your hospital stay, or to help with everyday living expenses.

Are Medicare Advantage plans a good deal? For many Medicare-eligible Americans, these plans are the right choice.  If you’re not sure about the advantages and disadvantages of Medicare Advantage and whether it’s right for you, HealthMarkets can help.

Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) provide all your Part A and Part B benefits through private insurance companies instead of the government. They also may offer additional benefits such as Part D prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing, and services such as acupuncture, meals, caregiver support, and more. And many plans are available for $0 per month.
